Dagorhir is the GrandPappy of all LARPs in the United States...and arguably the world. It still stands as the standard by which all others are measured, or at least so they like to think ;). In Central Virginia, there are a few different Combat-based LARPs to choose from. The two biggest are Dagorhir and Darkon. Travelling further out, we find Amtgard, the Society for Creative Anachronism(SCA), and a multitude of others. Here's how each fits into the bigger picture:
When I was a teenager, my dad thought my fighting was kinda funny and weird. Like most of my pursuits, he gave it little attention. But, by the time my little sister got into the game, he saw he only had a little while left to make a good relationship with her, and recognized it as a great way for him to connect with her and share a bonding experience doing something they could both really enjoy. So Greg, a man of many talents, took up leather working as his new hobby. In short order, he became quite good at it and orders began pouring in. Since he was in it for the fun of playing with his daughter, he never charged much beyond materials for his armor. Those two may not have agreed on much, but in Dagorhir, they found common ground and good times. Here's a link to an album of Greg and some of his work .
